Sophia Marshall continues her prodigious 2018 release schedule with ‘Song3”, a three-track EP that celebrates the talents of Damon Albarn and Blur – whilst incorporating a knowing, sideways glance at the whole Britpop shebang, the post-baggy ‘90s and the implosion of an industry wallowing in its final flabby payday. It would soon be gnawing on its own broken bones.

‘Song3 – Stripped of their digital pomp, the featured songs (“Boys & Girls”, “To The End” and “Tender”)

Stripped of their digital pomp, the featured songs (“Boys & Girls”, “To The End” and “Tender” – all mainstays of the Albarn / Blur canon) are treated with love, respect, and attention to detail, drawing out their individual idiosyncrasies and inevitably shifting some of their emphasis.

Indeed, Sophia’s gentle renditions expose both hidden subtleties and considerable song craft, their simple charms are laid bare, and primed perhaps to be sung at intimate acoustic evenings in backrooms of old pubs, or maybe around the dying embers of a beach bonfire at four in the morn.
